What this means is that the credit card numbers and personal information is encrypted when travelling across the Internet, which makes them impossible to read and misuse by someone who might see it. Many experts on credit card security states that using the credit card to pay your meal in restaurant abroad, during vacation, means taking a lot larger risk than shopping in Internet stores. .
What if it happens anyway?
Since the credit cards companies make a lot of money when transactions are made over the Internet (As well as they do in traditional stores), they have agreed to stand the risk when you use your credit card online. The stores that are offering credit card payment solutions have been approved to do this by the credit card company in question and are therefore deemed secure enough. This means YOU are insured and that your credit card company (or your bank) will refund any money or charges to your credit card that you claim not to have made. If they can prove it was you who placed the order they will not refund, however if you are subject to a fraud with your credit card this will not be the case and you will be refunded (It is called Chargeback). It is of course troublesome and will take some time, but you never stand the risk of loosing your money even if you are subject to fraud. Call your credit card company if you have uncertain.
